Corruption in the private sector is a "taboo subject" for managers...

Corruption in private companies in Romania accounts for around 60% of all forms of internal company fraud, compared to 40% in Western European countries. For most managers, these frauds are taboo subjects, according to Corporate Intelligence Agency, a company specialized in intelligence and risk management services for the private sector.

"Occupational fraud affects absolutely all companies, and Romania is no exception. The specificity of the phenomenon at the local level is due to several factors, such as a less developed organizational culture than in other countries, the lack of regular checks and the lack of control mechanisms over the activity of key employees within companies", says Gabriel Zgunea, CEO of Corporate Intelligence Agency.

According to the company, Fraud reaches 'astronomical' proportions in the production and storage area, where conflict of interest is coupled with abuse of power.

In addition to theft in the production and storage area, the most common fraud schemes in Romania include private corruption and theft of goods and money from company assets.

The situation in Romania is similar in dynamics and magnitude to other Central and Eastern European countries such as Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Croatia and Bulgaria.

International statistics show that 98% of private companies have been defrauded from within in the last two years.

The average loss incurred by a company as a result of internal fraud is up to €170,000 per case.
